letter to Philip, dated June 11, 1889
Frances Anne SWIRE was the second daughter of Roger SWIRE
and Frances Lydia COX. She was born 18 December 1825. Her mother's bible
states she was born in St. Vincent, West Indies, but no record of her
birth there has yet been found.
Frances Anne SWIRE was married on 19 October 1843 in
Portland Parish, Jamaica to Robert SPALDING. She was of Portland and he
was of Kingston at the time of their marriage, which is recorded in the
Portland Parish Register in Volume 4, Folio 66.
There is a Robert SPALDING listed as a Militia Artillery Lieutenant in the
1839 Jamaica Almanac for Surrey County, Kingston. There is also a Robert
SPALDING listed in the 1851 Jamaica Almanac as an Assistant Judge and
Magistrate for Surry County, Kingston and it is noted that he resides in
another parish.
Frances Anne SWIRE and Robert SPALDING had at least four children: Anne
SPALDING, Hinton SPALDING, Robert Roger Swire SPALDING, and Frances Jane
SPALDING.
The bible of Frances SWIRE's mother (Frances Lydia COX) states that Robert
SPALDING died of cholera on 10 January 1851 in St. Mary's Parish, Jamaica.
There is a Mrs. SPAULDING listed in the 1878 Jamaica Almanac for St. Mary
Parish, Richmond as proprietor of the Platfield Estate. Family letters
confirm this as Frances Anne Swire SPALDING, who was known as "Fashey/Fashy".
