Marianne SWIRE (1830 - 1910)

Marianne SWIRE was the fourth daughter of Roger SWIRE and Frances Lydia COX. She was born 24 March 1830 at Lenox Estate in Portland, Jamaica. Her birth is recorded in the Portland Parish Register in Volume 1, Folio 271.

Marianne SWIRE was married on 16 January 1851 in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica to Mark PLUES, a native of Yorkshire, England. He is believed to have been her first cousin, and nephew to her father by the marriage of Hannah SWIRE (sister of Roger SWIRE) and William PLUES.

Mark PLUES is listed in the 1851 Jamaica Almanac as a Lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment of Horse Militia.

Marianne SWIRE and Mark PLUES moved to the Melbourne area of Australia shortly after their marriage.

They had at least seven children:

  • Hannah Frances PLUES

  • William Swire PLUES

  • Unnamed child

  • Elizabeth Emily PLUES

  • Charles Markham PLUES

  • Marian Catherine PLUES

  • Edmund John James PLUES


Mark PLUES died in the Melbourne area of Victoria, Australia on 10 March 1863. Marianne SWIRE PLUES died in Kew, Victoria, Australia on 18 August 1910. Both are buried in the Boroondara Cemetery in Kew, Victoria, Australia, along with four of their children. Their marker reads:

HANNAH FRANCES Oct 1851 - Apr 1924
